Computer Vision Syndrome - Dry Eyes

You Probably Have Computer Vision Syndrome

Copyright: Jim Yang

It’s really not as bad as it sounds. With today’s lifestyle and workload requirements, most people probably sit in front of a computer most of their time at work, and probably for a few more hours more at home in the evening.

We’ve become so dependent on computers, and there aren’t many alternatives to using computers.  What ends up happening is that most people at one time or another gets the Computer Vision Syndrome, or CVS.

Dry Eyes - Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer Vision Syndrome is not really a disease of any type, but rather just caused by sitting in front of a computer screen for long periods of time.  The most common symptoms and problems of CVS are:

  • Dry and itchy eyes
  • Burning eyes
  • Eye strain and eye fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder, neck, back, and upper body pain and discomfort

You’ve probably experienced one or several of these symptoms.  I know I have.  Some times after sitting in front of the screen for too long, my eyes get extremely dry, and I have tough time keeping them open, and other times, I would have neck and back aches from improper sitting posture.

Eye Drop for Dry Eyes and Irritated Eyes

Irritated, dry eyes is probably the most common symptom that affects most computer users.  Blinking is a main reason for this symptom.  When you’re using a computer, you blink only a third as often as you normally would!  This is enough to cause your eyes to become dry and irritated.

Concentrating hard on the monitor forces you to open your eyes wider, which only make the problem worse.  There’s a simple solution to this:  blink more often.  It’s actually not that easy.  Here are 3 tips for alleviating irritated dry eyes:

  1. Blinking is something we do without really putting any thought into it.  So when you’re on the computer, you need to make a conscious effort to blink more often.
  2. Use eye drops to lubricate your eyes.
  3. Take a break every 30 minutes.  Get up and stretch.  Take your eyes off the monitor.
  4. Make sure your face is at least 20 inches away from the monitor, and if you have larger monitors, sit back further.
